Best Practices When You’re New to Work From Home

With the recent influx in cases of Coronavirus, thousands of companies have gone to great lengths to ensure their employees feel safe as concerns continue to grow. Many of these companies have even encouraged employees to work from home as a precaution against the virus.

The idea of working from home may seem great for most – and like the chance to play “hooky” from daily workloads for a few days. However, when a few days turns into a few weeks, creating a fully functioning work-space can be a bit overwhelming.

Here are a few best practices to keep in mind while transitioning from your daily office environment and adapting to your work from home routine successfully!

Work From Home Best Practices

Invest in great ergonomics.  You’ll be spending lots of time in your home-based office. Investing in a great chair, desk, keyboard and mouse is vital for your success.

Pro Tip: If your at-home office space permits, surround yourself with things that make you happy such as a small succulent or a picture from your beach vacation.

Plan out your workday. Work as if you were on the same schedule as in the traditional office setting. Making a list of priorities will help maximize your time and efficiency. A quick overview of your calendar at the top of your workday will also give you an idea of how your workday will play out and what you can schedule in-between. Resist the temptation to scroll through social platforms or your personal emails by tracking your daily progress through the list of priorities set each day.

Set Boundaries. Because you will be spending many hours in your at-home work-space, this area should be one of little distraction and provide you with a quiet work environment. Ideally, this would mean a room with a door (if you have one) that would indicate when you’re working and don’t wish to be bothered. However, if this is not an option, make sure that whatever work-space you are choosing to work from is consistent every day and fully functional for you!

Take regular breaks. Scheduling time to take frequent breaks throughout the day can reinvigorate you and make for a more productive workday. Try to stand up while in meetings or taking a phone call. Switching between standing and sitting at your workstation has been found to have positive effects on the mind and body!
