11 Feb The Upside of Being Downsized
In 2008 and 2009 during the Great Recession, more than half of the adults in the U.S. labor force experienced some work-related hardship such as a cut in pay, reduction in hours, unemployment or involuntary move to part-time work. Kim Filomena was one of them. However, little did she know that obstacle would lead to an opportunity to change her life, and the lives of her family, in very big ways.
Kim needed flexibility and work/life balance because she was caring for two elderly parents, a daughter, and a son with autism. “I was so scared. I knew that my opportunities were extremely limited because I needed something that would allow me to pay for my son’s medical care and other needs, but also provided flexibility.”
decided I had to give it a try.”
Kim quickly started her own at-home business, KFilomena LLC, and began the process to register her company to use the Arise Platform. Once the process was complete, Kim was able to purchase the small amount of equipment needed, start earning revenue for her business, and enjoy all the resources and support the partnership with Arise provides. Not only was she able to schedule exactly when and how often she worked, but Kim had immediate access to a range of clients to service, including many of the world’s leading companies.
A Supplemental Income That Soon Turned to Sole Income
When Kim first started her at-home business, it was to supplement the decrease in salary from her other management job and help with her finances. However, she quickly realized that Arise was providing the opportunity she had looked so hard to find, one that had great income potential and afforded her the flexibility and freedom she needed to care for what was most important – her family.
“In 2010, I started servicing my first client program through Arise and I loved it!” says Filomena. “I was still working at my other job to make ends meet, but after a few months I was thrilled to realize that I had enough income to quit that job and concentrate 100 percent on my business. For the past two and a half years, I have even started providing Quality Assurance Facilitator services for Arise.”
The True Measure of Success
While money in the bank is certainly a nice benefit to being successful, there are other measures of success that, as they say, are priceless. Kim knows that more than most, and credits the opportunities her company has through Arise for many of the priceless successes in her life.

For the past two and a half years, I have also been providing Quality Assurance Facilitator services for Arise and my company has been contracted to teach certification courses. It’s hard to believe that my company has been using the Arise Platform for almost five years. I am grateful every day for the opportunities that have come my way. I have found my gift and my passion and have also been afforded the time to work on myself and my family. In doing this I have gained so much and I have also lost…140 pounds over the past few years!”
Kim is an inspiring example of someone who turned a life setback into an opportunity of a lifetime. By taking back control of her livelihood, she created the life she wanted and needed for herself and her family. What once seemed unattainable and unimaginable, Kim now says “after almost four years, I can’t imagine ever doing anything else.”
